Lee Lee Lan passed the Advanced executant Exam of the Royal Academy of Dancing in London in 1971 and was made an Associate. She obtained the Advanced Teacher’s Certificate of the Academy in 1975. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree and is the Malaysian Organiser for the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, London. Besides training in London, she has also studied at the Martha Graham School Of Dancing, New York.
She started the Federal Academy of Ballet in 1968 which today is the biggest ballet school in Malaysia, with four branches. Her school was also the first in Malaysia to offer exams in Modern Dance and Tap Dancing.
She first choreographed for musicals – namely:- Show Boat, West Side Story, Flower Drum Song in the University of Malaya. She started choreographing dances for T.V. Malaysia from 1966 onwards in shows like “Serbanika ‘66”, “Tarian-tarian Malaysia”, “Anekaranna”, “Anekatari”, “Aseaneka” and “Dayana” where she was featured weekly with Malay, Indian and Chinese choreographers trying to create a Malaysian dance form.
She formed a touring group called “Federal Ballet Group” in 1975 with the aim of bringing ballet to the people. To date she has taken the group to perform in Kuantan, Ipoh, Penang, Malacca and Singapore.
