What is dance? Really.<\/p>\n
For me, dance is a communication. To deliver ideological message of choreographer and physical message of dancer, which both parties need to negotiate how things can work out. Dancer\u2019s body is the tool and it needs mediums to make effective conversation \u2013 steps (prescribed or spontaneous), movements, postures, gestures, energy, expression; or with the external means such as sound (from body or other devices), lighting, text, digital projection, outfit, probs or sets. Some may argue, dance is pure movements\/steps or alignment (or even some say \u2018figure\u2019). I wonder, can the human\u2019s body itself communicate well enough in dance? Given that movements and steps entail a specific kind of \u2018language\u2019, how sure are we this language is common enough to be understood in a way that message can be decoded by the recipient i.e. audience of our own community? If a message can be decoded, it may (or may not) create resonance or agreement hence understanding exist. If the message cannot be decoded, the dance may turn to pure entertainment and it may subject to spectator\u2019s individual aesthetic that\u2019s satisfiable by visual, aural or perception. What is dance and why are we making dance? I couldn\u2019t stop questioning myself.<\/p>\n
I had a hard time creating dance movements or giving steps of a particular \u2018language\u2019 that make no direct sense to the choreographic theme. I told myself to stop doing it and I discovered that I do not know how to create dance anymore. Body doesn\u2019t think but body carries memory. My body in fact carries a lot of memory of others (choreographies\/styles). How can I not conveniently create a piece using other people\u2019s tone at the same time my message is still identifiable by the audience? It is in fact a huge question but I think I\u2019m ready (already) to experiment.<\/p>\n
